Genuine Philips Air Purifier Filter vs Duplicate – HEPA, Carbon and NanoProtect Explained

Search for a Philips air purifier filter online and you will find the genuine FY filter listed next to “compatible” filters at half the price. The box looks similar, the size is the same, and the seller promises “HEPA H13”. So what are you actually paying for with the genuine part, and how do you tell the two apart once the parcel arrives? Having sold Philips spares for years, here is what we see.

HEPA, active carbon and NanoProtect – what each layer does

  • Pre-filter: the washable mesh on the outside. Catches hair, lint and large dust. Clean it monthly; it is not a replacement item.

  • HEPA layer: pleated filter paper that traps fine particles – PM2.5, pollen, smoke particles, bacteria. This is the layer that actually improves the AQI reading. A genuine Philips HEPA filter is tested to remove 99.97 % of particles down to 0.3 micron; Philips’ NanoProtect HEPA (used in FY0900, FY3430, FY4200 and the newer 2000/3000 series) is a charged, lower-resistance version that cleans faster at the same fan speed.

  • Active carbon layer: granules of carbon that absorb gases – cooking smell, smoke, paint fumes, formaldehyde. HEPA alone does nothing for smell. On the AC2887 and AC3256 families the carbon filter is a separate part (FY2420, FY3432); on the newer models it is bonded to the HEPA in one frame (FY2180, FY3200, FY0910, FYM220).

If your purifier takes two separate filters, replace both when the alert comes for either – a fresh HEPA behind a saturated carbon filter still lets the room smell of last night’s tadka.

Genuine vs duplicate: what is actually different

  • Filter media: genuine Philips filters use the paper grade and pleat count the purifier’s fan was designed for. Cheap copies use fewer pleats of coarser paper – lower resistance, so the fan sounds fine, but PM2.5 capture drops and the purifier’s own sensor will show it taking much longer to reach blue.

  • Carbon quantity: duplicates often have a thin carbon-coated sponge instead of carbon granules. It weighs noticeably less. The smell-removal difference is obvious within a week.

  • Frame fit: a filter that is even 2 mm short lets air bypass around the edge, unfiltered. Genuine frames seal against the purifier’s gasket.

  • Filter counter: the purifier cannot detect a duplicate, so it will happily count 4,800 hours on a filter that was finished at 1,500.

  • Warranty: Philips will not honour the purifier warranty for fan or sensor faults if a non-Philips filter is fitted.

How to identify a genuine Philips FY filter

  1. The FY code and the Philips / Versuni logo are printed on the filter frame itself, not only on the box.

  2. A 12-digit Philips part number is on the box label (for example 996510076531 for the FY1410/30). Duplicates usually show only the FY code.

  3. The filter comes sealed in a printed plastic bag with a “remove before use” instruction, inside a Philips-branded carton.

  4. Weight: a genuine HEPA + carbon filter feels dense. A suspiciously light filter is the first warning sign.

  5. Price: genuine FY filters are not sold at 40–50 % below the Philips list price. Our prices below are the normal dealer discount on the list price, and every invoice carries GST.

Can a HEPA filter be washed or cleaned?

No. Water collapses the pleats and carbon cannot be “recharged” at home. Vacuuming the outside of a HEPA filter removes surface dust and can buy a few weeks if you are waiting for a new one, but it does not restore the fine-particle capture. Only the pre-filter mesh is washable.
