Philips chutney jar for HL1631 mixer grinder

A Philips mixer grinder comes with three or four jars, and each one is built for a different job. Use the wrong jar and you get a burnt motor, a leaking lid or chutney that never turns smooth. When one jar cracks or the blade goes blunt, most people also do not know which jar they are asking for. This guide explains the blender jar, chutney jar, wet grinding jar and dry grinding jar – what each is for, what it looks like, the usual capacities, and what to check before ordering a replacement.

1. Wet grinding jar (the big one, 1.25–1.75 L)

The tallest jar, usually stainless steel with a flat, four-fin blade and a domed lid. It is designed for batter – idli/dosa, medu vada, and for grinding soaked dal. The blade sits low so it can pull a thick batter down into it, and the jar walls are straight so the batter does not climb out. Do not use it for dry spices: the flat blade throws whole spices around instead of cutting them, and the fine powder escapes through the lid vent.

2. Dry grinding jar (medium, 0.75–1 L)

The medium steel jar with a sharper, slightly raised blade and a tight lid without a big vent. It is for dry spices, masala, sugar, dal powder and small quantities of chutney when the chutney jar is too small. The blade is designed to cut hard seeds – coriander, cumin, pepper – and the shorter jar keeps the powder in the blade path. Running it with water for more than a few seconds is fine, but a full wet batter overloads the motor because the smaller jar cannot circulate it.

3. Chutney jar (small, 0.3–0.5 L)

The smallest jar, with a two-fin blade set very low. Coconut chutney, ginger-garlic paste, green chillies, a handful of nuts – anything in small quantity that must be ground fine. Because the blade is so close to the bottom, it works with as little as two spoons of water. It is the jar that gets replaced most often: the small lid is easy to crack, and grinding hard items like whole turmeric wears the blade.

4. Blender jar / juicer jar (transparent, 1–1.5 L)

The tall polycarbonate or glass jar with a pouring lip, a fruit filter (sieve) on some models and a lid with a cap. It is for milkshakes, lassi, juices, smoothies and soups – liquids, not paste. The blade is a thin serrated cross that works only when there is enough liquid to form a vortex. Grinding dry or thick items in the blender jar is the number-one cause of a cracked blender jar bottom and a burnt coupler.

Quick rule: which jar for what

  • Idli / dosa batter, dal, soaked rice, large quantity → wet grinding jar

  • Masala, spices, sugar, coffee, dry chutney podi → dry grinding jar

  • Coconut chutney, ginger-garlic paste, small quantities → chutney jar

  • Juice, milkshake, lassi, soup → blender / juicer jar

Before you order a replacement jar

  1. Find the model number on the sticker under the mixer base – HL1606, HL1631, HL7750, HL7773/02 and so on. Jars are model-specific: the coupler teeth, base diameter and lock position differ between series.

  2. Note the suffix after the slash (HL7773/01 vs /02) – Philips changed the jar design between some versions.

  3. Check whether you need the full jar assembly (jar + blade + lid) or just a part – a jar lid, gasket or coupler is far cheaper if the jar body is fine.

  4. Send us a photo of the old jar’s base along with the model number and we will match it before dispatch.
